Does anyone else wonder why the ancient calendar makers decided to put Leap Day in February instead of in - oh, any of those lazy Summer months? But, February? Isn't winter - even a mild one like we've had - already long enough?

Blink and You Missed It
It snowed on Thursday. If you blinked, you missed it. A few minutes later the sun came out; then another snow shower; then the sun came out again.
I got confused! I wasn't sure if it was a sign that Winter was coming or if it meant that today was the start of Baseball Season ;)

Morning and Evening
I just love the interesting clouds and weather patterns that keep sliding through Chicago. The top photo is from Thursday morning (around 9), the bottom photo is from the early evening (around 5:30). The middle of the day was actually rather sunny.

Watching for Waterspouts
There's an odd weather pattern (see the article here) involving the warm temperature of Lake Michigan and a slow moving low pressure weather system that caused a large number of waterspouts to form on Lake Michigan this past weekend. Here's the one I saw near South Haven. Michigan.

In a Fog
We don't usually see such heavy fog in the summer. Early Spring, yes. Autumn, yes. Summer, not so much.
However, on Tuesday, the cool Lake Michigan water temperature (around 65 degrees Fahrenheit) reacted with the extremely warm air temperature (92 with a heat index closing in on 100) to create a wall of fog around the city's lakefront. It only went in a few blocks from the lake. The fog was thick enough that all the beaches were closed to swimming. People could go to the beach but couldn't go in the water because the fog was so dense that the life guards couldn't see that far.

More Wild Clouds
After all the wild weather on Thursday, these clouds (also, as yesterday's photo was, from Friday July 1) made me wonder if Sigourney Weaver was going to be showing up with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Who you gonna call, then??

Blustery Spring
I actually took this photo about a week and a half ago. Then we had some beautiful sunny days so it just seemed out of place to post it. But we're back to foggy, rainy, unseasonably cold Spring so here it is. (You know it's bad when the television meteorologist and traffic person both say "Oh just stay home today.")

Got Some Weather Moving In
Chicago seems to be the target for some wild weather patterns lately. Or, at least, some wild skies. These Thursday afternoon clouds brought wind, rain, something one weather forecaster called slail (sleet + hail), colder temperatures and the first mention of the dreaded S Word* by weather forecasters.

Fog Attack
Autumn in Chicago means the fog can attack at any moment. This attack came with at 15 degree drop in temperature!
There are usually more buildings
visible in the skyline.
What happened to Lake Shore Drive?
The fog was still rolling through
(rather quickly)
at sunset.

A Day Only a Boater Would Love
No, my camera lens does not need a good cleaning. ;)
This photo was one of the early bridge runs (when the Chicago Bridges are raised to allow the sailboats to get to the harbors from their winter storage homes) this year. However, since the
weather today looked almost exactly like this, I figured it was OK to post a slightly older (really only two weeks) photo.

This Year, We're Below The Clouds
Took this picture from Montrose Point on Sunday morning. Clouds were rolling in over the Loop area, but hadn't gotten to the northern part of the city yet.
Here's the weird thing. A year ago Sunday, my Daily Chicago Photo post, here is the link, was a picture of low clouds coming into the Loop area from a high rise view point.

Icy Shore
I have a few more photos from the snow and freeze period in earlier January. This is from North Avenue Beach. In nice weather, this is the bike/walking path. But, on the second weekend in January, it was a bumpy and very slippery glaze of ice. It forms such an interesting pattern.

Somebody Likes Snow
Whoever wrote this must be very happy. It snowed all day today and the forecast is for more of the same tomorrow. Something I noticed while strolling around today is that people seem to see a blanket of snow as another opportunity to say what's on their mind in even fewer than 140 characters.

Signs of Ice
This is a "leftover" photo from the end of December when an ice storm came through Chicago and interrupted holiday travel. I can see why travel was so messed up. Everything - street signs, trees, plants, stairway railings - was coated with a layer of ice.

Sandy Snow Dunes
... or snowy sandy dunes?
This picture is not in sepia. The sand has dusted over the snow that piled up on the picnic tables and dunes in Petoskey State Park.

Charlevoix The Beautiful
A little pre-holiday getaway to the Little Traverse Bay area of upper lower Michigan. They've had way more snow than Chicago. This is the Charlevoix Lighthouse in the background and some cool icicles in the foreground. I'd never seen icicles form in a curvy pattern like this.
