Chestnuts at the Market

The Green City Market is one of my favorite farmer's markets in Chicago. In November, they move into a large heated tent by the Peggy Notebaert Nature Center for the weekly Wednesday and Saturday markets. This winter, they will try to keep going twice a month through April. One of the vendors, Hillside Orchards, has chestnuts for roasting, as well as chestnut flour and chestnut flakes for baking.

Chestnuts grow in these prickly pods. Hillside shows them with and without these pods. Despite the sign, and the dangerous look, people still touch them ... apparently to make sure they are really sharp!
