Wolf Lake Sunset

One more from Friday's sunset. This is leftover sunset color on Wolf Lake. Taken through the passenger side window created a cool blur of foliage in the foreground.

State Line

The Illinois-Indiana State Line Marker is the oldest structure in Chicago and is located in the East Side neighborhood of Chicago. Made of sandstone blocks, it was built in 1838 to mark the determination of the states' boundaries. According to a plaque on the monument, it was relocated 191.09 feet north of its original location.

In the background of these photos, on the Indiana side of the monument, is the State Line Generating Plant.

A Hint of What's Coming

While I am glad this is not snow, it is something related: road salt.

A huge pile of road salt.

This one, in the East Side neighborhood, is probably one of many stashes around the city (Chicago does stockpile and can be a little selfish about its road salt). I'm glad we're prepared but I hope we don't need to use all of it!

Environmental Graffiti

We were over in Eggers Grove recently doing a little birdwatching when I noticed the dolphin graffiti on the huge electric tower. Eggers Grove is a nature area (that was previously a Nike Missile Site) known for good birdwatching opportunities. Maybe that's why even the graffiti has a nature theme.

Feathered Friends: Green Heron at Eggers Grove

Eggers Grove (also called Eggers Woods) is part of the Lake Calumet area -- a wooded, marshy, and prairie nature preserve in the middle of a highly industrialized area of Chicago. It's in the East Side neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago -- over in the land of the alphabet streets: Avenue A, Avenue B, Avenue C, etc. (Street names start around the letter K).

I'd never been there and was pleasantly shocked at what we found when exploring. Part of the Eggers Grove area is a lush green marshy jungle (see the second picture); the other part is an open prairie area.

In the marshy section, we found this Green Heron hunting for its lunch. I have to admit, I do wonder about Green Herons. Here it is hunting in this cloudy water marsh. Previously we saw one by the North Branch of the Chicago River (also kind of a cloudy water area). These type of birds must have cast-iron digestive systems.

I have a few more pictures of the Green Heron at Eggers Grove at my bird-watching site, which is here.
