Preserving Playgrounds

This is the last of the four relief carvings on City Hall. The carvings "represent ... four principle concerns of city government: playgrounds, Schools, Parks, and Water Supply".

This one is the Playground one. Like the other three, this one has great detail. Faintly carved in the background are the flexibility rings, and either a pommel horse or the horizontal bars (on which I am a total klutz).

History Note: Today is Chicago's Birthday. It was incorporated as a city on March 4, 1837.

Permanent Park

Today I'm posting the third of the four relief carvings on City Hall. The four relief carvings by the entrance to City Hall "represent ... four principle concerns of city government: playgrounds, schools, parks, and water supply".

This one focuses on Parks. The figures in the carving seem to be planting trees and, perhaps, pruning the branches.

Schooling

Last week, I posted a photo of one of four relief carvings on City Hall. I went back and got the pictures of the other three. I'll be posting them periodically.

The four relief carvings by the entrance to City Hall "represent ... four principle concerns of city government: playgrounds, schools, parks, and water supply". This one focuses on Schools. Like the Water Supply relief, this carving is very detailed. I interpret this as the student reading a book under a tree with her teachers making sure she keeps up her studies.

Surf's up

This is another one of those "When did they put that there?" realizations. This is a relief carving on City Hall that I recently noticed. It's incredibly detailed with a lighthouse in the background and a hermit crab just to the right of the swimmer.

Apparently this is one of four relief carvings by the entrance to City Hall that "represent ... four principle concerns of city government: playgrounds, schools, parks, and water supply". This is probably the water supply panel. Now, I want to go back and look for the other three.
